Nashville: A Dissection by Jennie Day-Burget

I spent some time in Nashville this weekend for an great conference, the National Information Officers Association (NIOA) annual conference. Amazingly, on day #2, I sat down at lunch next to Jim Weaver, the PIO for Overland Park PD. Small world, eh? I had no idea who he was until he introduced himself, but we certainly had a lot to talk about! He gave me the scoop on all the latest happenin’s around my home town….

ANYWAY, so the conference was great and all… the town of Nashville… eh, not so much. Luckily, Kory, one of my old friends from college/high school, was also in Nashville on Wednesday night for business, so I had someone to help me try to understand this town that is Nashville.

Overall, I was totally disappointed in this city; I’ve been to a lot of cities in the world; a lot of major metropolis’… and until Nashville, had never encountered one that offended me quite so deeply. Between the hillbilly pride, the desire to be a redneck and the constant use of the confederate flag, I don’t think these people could make themselves look any more close-minded, idiotic and just plain stupid. I don’t plan on going back. Ever. I get that there is supposed to be this fantastic music scene but any redeeming music that I found was totally overpowered by the horrible social acceptance of things like the confederate flag.

Here is my photo diary of what I saw in the city:

I had time one late afternoon to hit up the Frist Museum of Visual Arts, which was right next to my hotel. The bathroom was totally redone in this awesome art deco style-- had to take a photo!

Oh yeah. They did it. They made and sell a t-shirt with a cowboy cat drawing and the word "meowsic" on it.

Wow. Glad to see they're keeping up with modern politics down there. Glad to know it's all about money and guns for them. Great priorities.

The Cousin Trifecta

Cousin times three came in town last weekend — it’s been awhile since I’ve seen the three of them as whole ensemble (last Christmas, I believe), and of course, it was terribly fun. They are a funny trio. (Here are some photos… Alex somehow failed to make his way into one)

Ciao, Aussies!

Well, we had to send them off in style, of course, so Aaron and I organized a little going away pub crawl for our favorite Aussies over the weekend. The night was SUPER fun; there were libations, karaoke and lots of hilarity. (For the record, I did not do karaoke, as mommy does NOT do that sort of thing)

This shoot was especially fun because the granddaughter, Haleigh, was one of my most vivacious and willing subjects ever!

One Week and Counting…

I had the express pleasure of photographing my dear friend Katie’s brand, spanking new baby, Ashlyn, a couple weeks ago. At the time of her modeling debut, Ashlyn was exactly one week old… and incredibly beautiful. I think I’m going to like this job!

Here are some of my favorites — the complete shoot can be seen here: http://www.portlandfreshphoto.smugmug.com/gallery/9249536_YgjPq#617599233_jdpe4

Healthy Boy!

When we adopted our furry angel, Newman, from The Pixie Project last year, he had just had an entire round of shots and such. So, other than a brief visit to Dove Lewis when that little incident with the angry Golden Retriever occurred, we’d never been to the vet with Newman, nor knew, for sure, that he was a healthy guy other than the fact that he seemed okay.

Since August was his due date for all his updated vaccines, we took him in to the vet last night and we’re thrilled to find out that our guy is 100% healthy and in good shape. There is nothing wrong with his heart, lungs, hips, eyes, ears, etc. And, despite our feeling that perhaps his eye-sight is a teensy bit lacking, the doctor did an eye examine and saw only a “deep, beautiful retina!” So, perhaps if there was such a thing as doggy corrective lenses, he would need them, but since there’s not, he’ll just have to keep on chasing balls in the wrong direction and barking at shapes on walls. Nothing congenital or bad there…just slightly embarrassing moments for Mom and Dad!

The people at the vet’s office loved him, of course. I think he thought perhaps he’d entered Doggy Disney Land. Every new room he entered earned a treat and every shot and procedure he sat through earned another treat — Aaron was stocked up with treats too, so he was milking dad every time the vet would turn around. He was also told how cute he was at least 600 times… but we’re not proud or anything!

Newman is 100% healthy! YAY!

Come Sail Away… Come Sail Away with Meeeeeeee!!!

Our neighbors were nice enough to take us sailing on Sunday evening, on the Columbia River, which divides Oregon and Washington. We had a really great time — the afternoon and evening were both beautiful and Aaron even got to try his hand at the sport. Rumor has it he was really good at sailing — and would love to do it again!

He was a bit perplexed when, while steering the boat, it almost completely turned on its side – I thought his eyes might pop out of his head… but alas, we didn’t capsize.. we were just sailing.

Here are some of my favorite photos:

Weekend in Review: Tattoo

Okay, so it’s a couple days late, but here was one of the two highlights of our weekend:

I LOVE this design!

I LOVE this design!

So, this will be the ultimate test of if my mom reads our blog or not… because I know she’s gonna freak out and I’m soon to get a frantic phone call! But, Mom, calm down! I LOVE it and I know you’ll think it’s beautiful when you see it! I waited until I was 30 (almost) to get this. It’s not like this was some drunk college mistake. This was a very well planned out and rational decision made with my husband and I can’t even tell you how happy I am with it. It’s like having this gorgeous piece of jewelry on my body at all times… and one of my birds is blue! He’s my favorite.

Anyway, so I finally did it! The gentleman, Tommy Morgan, who did the tattooing was an incredible artist and very meticulous in his detail. And I trusted him because not only did he have a great portfolio, but he’s got his own tattoo tv show on AE — in other words, if they put him on tv tattooing people, he had at least some cred… he wasn’t going to mess me up. And he certainly didn’t! His design kicks ass and is exactly what I wanted!

PS: Aaron got another tattoo too… but we’ll let him disclose those details in his own time….
